Finding Your Furniture Fit ? George Slavovs Home Improvement Site

One of the best ways to turn your house into a home is finding furniture that personalizes your space. Your furniture should showcase some of your likes, passions and tastes in order to help give your house the personality it deserves.

When you move into a new house, personalizing your space can seem like a huge task to take on, especially if your new space is bigger than what you?ve had in the past. This process doesn?t have to be as daunting as it seems if you keep some things in mind as you?re decorating.

Your whole house doesn?t need to be decorated in a day. Transforming a house into a home can be a time consuming, yet rewarding experience.

One decorating tip to embrace is the idea of complementing or contrasting a space. Your house can look cluttered if you have a many different furniture styles mixed in, but if you embrace the chaos in an organized manner, it can give it the personal touch you were looking for.

Select or employ decorative furniture that is opposite of the style of your home?s architecture to give it an interesting look. If your home?s architecture is old fashioned, try using modern-looking designs to contrast the two. The look will not only be interesting, but will blend surprisingly well.

Another factor to consider when purchasing your furniture is its durability.? While there are many furniture pricing options available, you never want to buy something thinking that you will probably just get rid of it in 6 months. Try to find a balance between furniture that is aesthetically pleasing but will also be able to handle normal wear and tear.

The presence of children in your house is a huge element to factor in when selecting your furniture. Kids tend to be prone to accidents and spills, so your furniture should be able to withstand life?s little messes. Look for furniture that is durable, constructed of easy-to-clean materials, and doesn?t have any sharp edges that could create unnecessary injuries. When you factor these items in, there are more options available to people without children, but either way, furniture?s durability should be considered.

Whatever factors you choose to consider when selecting your home?s furniture, just be sure that you are embracing your own style rather that adapting to someone else?s. While you may enjoy the look they come up with for a while, if you don?t incorporate your own ideas and personality into your space you will probably get tired of it. It will not be successful in transforming your house into your home.

Take your time to select the furniture that is right for you and your family so you can enjoy your home for years to come.

Mission success for MSL Entry, Descent, & Landing Instrument (MEDLI)

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Mission success for the MSL Entry, Descent, & Landing Instrument (MEDLI) Suite. When the Curiosity rover touched down on the red planet Aug. 6 at 12:32 p.m. CDT, NASA MEDLI researchers were already cheering. The instrumentation payload, carried in the entry vehicle's heatshield, included an intricate array of sophisticated engineering sensors designed to measure heat, pressure and other conditions impacting the heatshield during atmospheric entry and descent. The shield is jettisoned prior to landing.

The MEDLI suite powered up successfully Aug. 5 during the Mars Science Laboratory's approach to Earth's nearest planetary neighbor. About an hour before entry, descent and landing, the sensor suite's temperature stabilized at minus-20 degrees Fahrenheit, readying MEDLI for its journey through Mars' atmosphere. Real-time streaming data from the shield sensors was acquired through much of the vehicle's entry and descent -- barring the brief UHF-frequency communications blackout upon entry -- until Curiosity deployed its parachutes and jettisoned its heatshield. The rover touched down smoothly in Gale Crater to begin its two-year primary mission.

Only about 10 percent of MEDLI's data is now in the hands of the research team; the rest will be relayed by the Mars lander in coming days, and will be analyzed and published in the weeks and months ahead. The team's findings will help NASA engineers design safer, more efficient entry systems for future missions to Mars and other destinations -- missions carrying human crews as well as robotic explorers such as Curiosity.

MEDLI is one of NASA's Technology Demonstration Missions -- a series of advanced technology projects designed to validate and mature laboratory-proven technologies to flight-ready status, reducing costs and aiding our boldest missions of exploration and scientific discovery. To learn more about MEDLI, watch this NASA video.

MEDLI was designed and developed by NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., in partnership with NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The project is supported by NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate and NASA's Human Exploration & Operations Mission Directorate.

The Technology Demonstration Missions program is sponsored by NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist, managed for the agency by the Marshall Space Flight Center and supported by NASA field centers and partner facilities around the nation.

What?s on a Ku Klux Klan Membership Application?

Name, address, and information about membership in secret orders. Klan applications vary by chapter, but most begin with the same information required for a drugstore discount card (contact information, age, marital status, etc.). Then there?s information specific to white extremist groups. Applicants usually have to disclose whether they?ve ever worked in law enforcement or for the government in any capacity. They must affirm that they are white Christians, and that they don?t belong to other secret orders like the freemasons. (Conspiracy theorists?Klansmen chief among them?believe the masons are plotting to take over government and subvert Christianity.) Some applications include the question ?Do you believe all men are created equal?? The correct answer, if you?re a prospective Klansman, is ?no.? Extremist websites sometimes use the same technique, popping up this question and diverting those who answer ?yes? away from the site.

Oil prices hover above $93 a barrel in Asia

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Oil hovered above $93 a barrel Wednesday in Asia as concerns about supply disruptions supported a two-month, 21 percent rally.

Benchmark crude was down 46 cents to $93.21 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.47 on Tuesday to settle at $93.67 in New York.

In London, Brent crude was down 56 cents at $111.44 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Crude has jumped from below $78 in June despite signs of weak economic growth and no official confirmation of expectations of another round of major monetary stimulus by the U.S. or Europe. Investor optimism has sparked a global stock market rally this week, which has helped carry crude prices higher.

The surge in crude has also been fed this week by supply disruptions after a fire at a Chevron refinery in California and pipeline explosions in Turkey that were carrying crude from Iraq.

"This week's price advance has easily exceeded our expectations and would appear to have some legs for further gains," energy trader and consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report. "Supply disruptions are always difficult to predict but we will also suggest that the pop in risk appetite in recent days has exceeded our expectations given limited hard news regarding central bank stimulus."

The latest U.S. supply data suggested demand may be improving. The American Petroleum Institute said crude inventories plunged 5.4 million barrels last week while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted a drop of 300,000 barrels.

Gasoline supplies rose 417,000 barrels last week, the API said.

In other Nymex energy trading, wholesale gasoline futures were down 1.2 cents at $2.98 a gallon and heating oil slid 1.5 cents to $2.98. Natural gas was up 0.3 cent at $2.97 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The Power of a Painting ? Safe, Loving Homes through the Eyes of Children

Deborah Olaleye ? Amara Communications Intern

The door was royally blue. Each wall beamed brightly red. The heat huffed and the smoke puffed out of the chimney. It may have been a vibrant, colorful re-imagination, but it was inspired by a real house, or better yet, a home warmed by a family.

Loving home by Samantha

Loving home by Samantha

On my first day as an intern at Amara, I came across this image hanging by a co-worker?s desk. Samantha?s painting of her home truly resonated with me.

Through a simple image, Samantha conveyed the excitement, joyfulness, and comfort that her family gave her.

My co-worker told me that Samantha?s painting was featured in an Amara Annual Report publication.

Samantha?s painting provides donors and community partners with a lasting visual of how their collaboration assists Amara in its mission to help children in our community find homes similar to the one in her painting.

My adoptive family by Grace

My adoptive family by Grace

I was intrigued by the concept of paintings and other forms of artwork, as visual stories. I looked into other past Amara publications, and I came across the image below. Isn?t it sweet?

Grace, ?the 4-year old artist, adoringly illustrates in her radiant drawing the indescribable happiness and peace that comes from having a ?forever family.?

I was touched by the artwork created by children. Their paintings do not simply show a picture of a house or a family. Instead, through their art children creatively depict the love, security, and joyfulness that having a family provides.
