Widow of bombing suspect hires criminal lawyer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? The widow of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has hired a prominent criminal lawyer with experience defending terrorism cases as she continues to face questions from federal authorities.

Katherine Russell added New York lawyer Joshua Dratel to her legal team, her attorney Amato DeLuca said Wednesday. Dratel has represented a number of terrorism suspects in federal courts and military commissions, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detainee David Hicks, who attended an al-Qaida-linked training camp in Afghanistan.

"Mr. Dratel's unique, specialized experience will help insure that Katie can assist in the ongoing investigation in the most constructive way possible," DeLuca said in a written statement.

He said Russell, who has not been charged with any crime, will continue to meet with investigators as "part of a series of meetings over many hours where she has answered questions."

Providence-based DeLuca and Miriam Weizenbaum have been representing Russell, who is from Rhode Island. They specialize in civil cases such as personal injury law.

An FBI spokeswoman wouldn't comment when asked Wednesday whether Russell is cooperating.

DeLuca has said Russell had no reason to suspect her husband and his brother in the deadly April 15 bombing.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, ethnic Chechens from southern Russia, are accused of planting two shrapnel-packed pressure cooker bombs near the marathon's finish line, killing three people and injuring about 260. Tamerlan was killed in a getaway attempt after a gunbattle with police. Dzhokhar, who was captured hiding in a tarp-covered boat outside a house in a Boston suburb, was charged with using a weapon of mass destruction to kill. Their mother has said the allegations against them are lies.

Russell, 24, married Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2010, and they had been living in Cambridge, Mass., with their 2-year-old daughter when the bombing happened. Russell has been staying in her family's home in North Kingstown, just south of Providence, since her husband and brother-in-law were identified as suspects in the case.

Hicks, an Australian, spent more than five years at Guantanamo. He pleaded guilty in March 2007 and served a nine-month sentence in Australia.

A trick to fold proteins more quickly: 'Clever' technique speeds up the analysis of protein dynamics

May 8, 2013 ? A team of researchers of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste and of University of Cambridge have devised a method to reduce the time used to simulate how proteins take on their signature three-dimensional shape. Such important information to comprehend their function is usually obtained using often very costly experimental techniques.

To understand how proteins work it is important to know their three-dimensional shape, but also the way it is produced. We need to know, in other words, how the amino acid filament which makes up the proteins is capable of folding over itself to take on a specific shape.

Today the study of molecular dynamics of proteins is based on computer simulations in which the system is treated as a three-dimensional set of balls (1 ball = 1 atom) observed while it evolves through time. This is a very accurate but rather slow technique, therefore a group of researchers, including Daniele Granata and Alessandro Laio at SISSA of Trieste, have devised a trick to reduce simulation times.

"We exploit the experimental data obtained observing the proteins through nuclear magnetic resonance, and use them to create restraints to be applied to the model," explained Laio, who has coordinated the research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"Basically, we used a 'trick'. Imagine I pulled your arm and directed you towards a certain place, let's say, to have a reference, from Trieste to Rimini. The trick enables to reach a destination in a period of time even a thousand times inferior to what usually required for that itinerary. Thanks to mathematical rules- gathered from previous observations carried out on 'trips to Rimini' -- I can calculate, starting from the fixed travel time, how long it would have taken the same individual to spontaneously reach the same destination without being pulled. The same assumption may be applied to a protein that must fold in order to take on a certain shape."

"There is a law that connects the time a protein takes to fold using the 'trick' and the time used to do it spontaneously," explains Laio.

The technique employed by Granata and Laio, applied in this case to streptococcal protein G, has enabled to obtain results which are perfectly consistent with those obtained using the more common technique, with the advantage it remarkably reduces calculation times. "Considering the slowness of standard computer molecular dynamics techniques, methods like ours optimize processing times and could give a big boost to research."

Valve experiments with players' sweat response, eye-tracking controls for future game design

Valve has a surprisingly varied staff roster. Mike Ambinder is the company's very own experimental psychologist and he's been outlining some of Valve's work with biofeedback technology, including eye-motion controls for Portal 2 and perspiration-based gaming adjustments on Left 4 Dead. Mentioning these developments at the NeuroGaming Conference last week, Ambinder notes that both are still at an experimental stage, but that "there is potential on both sides of the equation, both for using physiological signals to quantify an emotion [and] what you can do when you incorporate physiological signals into the gameplay itself."

In Left 4 Dead, test subjects had their sweat monitored, with values assigned to how much they were responding to the action. This data was fed back into the game, where designers attempted to modify (and improve) the experience. In a test where players had four minutes to shoot 100 enemies, calmer participants would progress normally, but if they got nervous, the game would speed up and they would have less time to shoot. When it came to the eye-tracking iteration of Portal 2, the new controls apparently worked well, but also necessitated separating aiming and viewpoint to ensure it worked. With Valve already involving itself in wearable computing, it should make both notions easier to accomplish if it decides to bring either experiment to fans. Stockholm boasts a new attraction that's already drawing crowds to the Swedish capital -- a museum devoted to the city's most successful musical act, ABBA.

Though ABBA disbanded 30 years ago, their popularity endures. Even so, former member Bjorn Ulvaeus, who was instrumental in the museum's development, finds the idea of the project strange.

"It's a bit weird to build a museum of yourself," he told TODAY's Natalie Morales. But he added, "The city of Stockholm has been asking for this for a long time.

Of course, fans of the disco legends have been asking for something for a long time too -- an ABBA reunion.

"I'm the only one who says no then," Ulvaeus mused when it was revealed that his former fellow bandmates are all on board with the idea. "If we really think about it ? oh, well."

"Oh, well? He's not saying no here," Morales responded optimistically.

But Ulvaeus was quick to counter that.

"I am!" he insisted.

Kenya wind project closes in on full funding after AfDB loan

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's Lake Turkana Wind Power project secured a $149.5 million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) on Tuesday which officials expect to help speed full funding of one of Africa's largest wind projects.

Kenya aims to plug a power supply shortfall which coupled with an ageing grid means frequent blackouts that hurt industry in east Africa's biggest economy.

Turkana Wind will have a capacity of 300 megawatts on completion in 2015 and produce electricity equivalent to almost 20 percent of the country's installed power.

The AfDB loan includes a partial risk guarantee which is expected to unlock another 300 million euros from other lenders such as the European Investment Bank, officials said.

"We expect to close the financing very shortly," Gabriel Negatu, AfDB's regional director for East Africa, told a news conference.

"We expect some form of groundbreaking by the end of this year," he said.

"To satisfy the bank requirements under project finance is very challenging. Quite rightly so because the banks are taking risks and they want these risks to be mitigated," Carlo Van Wageningen, chairman of Turkana Wind, told Reuters. "(This is) ...proof that financial close is now in sight."

Kenya has enormous wind resources with the site of the Turkana project.

"The winds are very special in that area and among the best, if not the best, in the world. They are very consistent and very predictable," Van Wageningen said.

Some 365 850-kilowatt wind turbines will be installed in the far north county of Marsabit.

Danish firm Vestas has won contracts to supply turbines to KenGen, the country's biggest power producer, which already runs a tiny wind farm near the capital Nairobi.

Kenya, which has been praised by the United Nations Environmental Programme for a progressive energy policy, opened up to independent power producers 15 years ago, ahead of many states in the region.

AfDB said it would fund several other energy sector projects in east Africa, including a hydro-generation plant in Uganda and development of gas fields in Tanzania.
